"The
pisco sour corner"
There are things that could not happen in Lima, this is one of those. I met Martin through the digital magazine elpiscoesdelperu.com, I couldn't believe his story, a street bar? What things happen! The truth is that in August 2004, without a job, his brother, a pisco producer in Cañete (145 km south Lima) offered him to sell his pisco, and he had no better idea to place his ironing board, his shaker, in the street, and start preparing pisco sours. He strategically placed near the Plaza de Armas (Mayor Square), in San Vicente de Cañete on the corner of the Credit Bank (BCP) and started. At the beginning he didn't sell anything, but he was sure that this was just about to begin, so at the end of the day he closed his bar, loaded his stuff, call a cab and returned home with the hope of the next day things would get better, until one day he sold one, and from then on, every day he was convinced that his business was growing, in December of that year he sold his first 250 soles (US$.65.- approx.).
In February
2005 the national pisco sour day was celebrated, and Martin had no better idea;
close the street with all the tables he found on his way, causing a tremendous
traffic jam, that in a city like Cañete does not happen every day, so the municipality
took action, and prohibited him to disturb the order. At that moment Martin
decided to rent a place, was offered one a few steps away from where he was so,
let's do it! The curious thing is that his clients, many of them executives and
engineers of the Hydroelectric plant El Platanal and Camisea Gas projects,
asked him to be the only one preparing pisco sours for them. His sympathy, his
recipe, his way of preparing it were his hook; he had become part of the
landscape, the discreet friend, the bartender. With time he increased his menu
with other cocktails. He placed his
tables in the middle of the street, even closing it. All this ended up turning
his small business into what today is Bar D'Maced "La esquina del pisco
sour".
This year Martin
told me his story and explained that on the Pisco Sour National Day on February
6th, he was going to give away 1500 pisco sours in his two locations, all made
with his shaker, no blender, it was a great success. Martin's next step is Lima
"We are going to open a bar in the capital, with the same interest with
which we started in Cañete: "the massification of pisco sour
consumption". His children are already preparing to follow his footsteps,
one of them is studying to be a bartender and his daughter as a business
administrator, also his bartenders have won first places in national contests
such as:
-Great Week of
Lima 1st Place (creative cocktail 2007).
-Contest organized by The Americas University and Pisco Ocucaje. 2nd place
(creative cocktails) 2008
-Pisco Sour Festival in Miraflores 3rd place (pisco sour) 2008
-National Pisco Contest Jockey Plaza Santiago de Surco-Lima (pisco sour -
creative cocktail). 2007 - 2008
-National
Qualifying Contest for the World Championship of Puerto Rico (creative cocktails).
2008
-National Qualifying Contest on the way to the Pan-American of Cuba 3rd place
in Lima zone (creative cocktails). 2008
-Conference "Master Class 2008" by Ron Habana Club.
-Classic Cocktail contest Org. at the II Tourism, Gastronomy & Entertainment
Fair 2008. First Place.
Congratulations Martin, let successes continue!
