"Is there anything more evocative than a smell to take us back to our childhood? To be back in short pants in a freshly harvested wheat field or in a room filled with the scent of yeast? It's grandma who is there: her smile, her apron, everything seems to come back to life for you. Your movie is playing for your unique emotion..." Taken from Le Nez Du Vin by Jean Lenoir.
On the occasion of the Pisco and Wine Contest in the district of Santiago, Ica, (located at 316.8 km South Lima), the tasters gather beforehand to share breakfast every year, kindly invited by Engineer Juan Mendiola Huayamares, who, along with the Municipality of Santiago, organizes these contests now in their eighteenth edition. During the conversation, the following question arose: which of these contests is the oldest? We know it dates back to 1993, although there must have been previous events. Working in Ica, I remember an annual event in the main square where producers presented their piscos. Currently, there are district and provincial contests throughout the year in all pisco-producing regions. I have participated in them since 2009. Reviewing documents, I found a list of the most important ones by age. In 1993, the First National Pisco Contest took place in Ica, and the First Regional Pisco Contest in Arequipa. In 2000, the First Producers' Meeting and Pisco Contest in Nazca, and the First 'Craft Pisco' Contest in Lunahuaná, Cañete, Lima. In 2001, the First Regional Pisco Contest in Tacna. In 2004, the First Pisco and Wine Contest in Santa Cruz de Flores, Cañete, and the First District Pisco and Wine Contest in the District of Santiago, Ica. That year also included the First Expo Pisco Wong, Lima. From 2005 to 2009, I did not find more district or provincial contests until we began our participation in national and regional contests.
At that time, regional contests took place in each region, and the winners competed in the National Contest held in one of the pisco-producing regions. In addition, the pisco festival was organized, where award-winning piscos were presented, and sales were promoted. Since 2009, we have had the sponsorship of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), following the rules of international contests. Other important contests we have participated in include the II Uvina Pisco Contest in Paullo, Lunahuana (2011) and the Provincial Pisco Festival and Contest in Cañete (August 2011). Also, the II Pisco Contest in Imperial, Cañete (2017) and the II and III Pisco Festival and Contest in Quilmana, Lima (2016 and 2018). The I and II Uvina Pisco Contest 'Uvina Fest' was held in Lima (November 2018 and 2019).
In 30 years, countless contests have taken place. Just this year, between Ica and Lima, the XXI Meeting of Producers and Pisco Contest in Nazca, the I Provincial Pisco Contest in Cañete (August), the XIX Pisco and Wine Contest in Santa Cruz de Flores, Cañete, XX Expo Pisco Wong, Lima (September). and the XVIII Pisco and Wine Contest in Santiago, Ica (October) have been held. Keep moving forward. Enjoy pisco responsibly.
Until next time!
