Since 2006 Spreading Pisco Culture to the World
Pisco History I
Grapes first arrived in Peru in the 16th century, brought from the Canary Islands by Hernando de Montenegro. In the mid-16th century (1574), the Spaniards began to use the name "Pisco" to refer to a river, a town, and a port. This area served as one of the main regional trade routes for shipping guano and silver bound for Spain. The records of different chroniclers and other historical sources indicate that the combination of lands was favorable for grape cultivation and the development of viticultural techniques.
These grapes, which flourished in the valleys of southern Peru, gave birth to the "water of life" (firewater, spirit) known as Pisco in the 17th century. As a result, the history of Pisco also represents a chapter in the culturally enriching mix of races that we all embrace as part of our national identity, both within Peru and abroad.
